KSHP Annual Awards

At the Fall Meeting each year KSHP seeks to acknowledge the hard work and innovation of its members through our our annual awards. The awards are listed below with full descriptions of the award criteria. KSHP Annual Awards nominations are accepted in the summer of each year and are presented at the Fall Meeting.

Organizational/Pharmacy Awards:

Special Pharmacy Achievement Award
In special recognition of a specific achievement in the profession of pharmacy.  Recipients of this award may be asked to present their achievement to the membership of KSHP either in the KSHP Newsletter, as a poster presentation, or a clinical/management pearl at an educational meeting

Award qualifications include:

  • A practice of pharmacy within Kentucky (or contiguous metropolitan area)
  • A specific, outstanding achievement by a pharmacy in acute or ambulatory settings including the development of new systems, techniques, problem resolutions, interventions, and implementation of processes that benefit patient care and promotes the profession of pharmacy
  • Must demonstrate positive outcomes for patient care and the profession of pharmacy
  • Submitting pharmacist must be a member of KSHP.

KSHP Innovative Health-System Pharmacy Practice Award
This award acknowledges the institution that develops and implements state of the art processes to improve patient care and contribute to the practice of pharmacy.  Recipients of this award may be asked to present their achievement to the membership of KSHP either in the KSHP Newsletter, as a poster presentation, or a clinical/management pearl at an educational meeting

Award qualifications include:

  • A practice of pharmacy within the state of Kentucky (or contiguous metropolitan area)
  • The institution has implemented changes within the award cycle to make significant progress towards implementing one or more aspects of the ASHP Pharmacy Practice Advancement Initiative (PAI) including but not limited to: optimizing pharmacists roles within the health-system, advancing the application of information technology in the medication use process, advancing the use of pharmacy technicians, or successful implementation of new pharmacy practice initiatives.
  • Must demonstrate positive outcomes for patient care, the institution, and the profession of pharmacy
  • The process and implementation must be multidisciplinary and promote organizational development
  • Submitting pharmacist must be a KSHP member.

KSHP Innovative Health-System Pharmacy Practice Award – Small or Rural Hospital
This award acknowledges the institution that develops and implements state of the art processes to improve patient care and contribute to the practice of pharmacy.  Recipients of this award may be asked to present their achievement to the membership of KSHP either in the KSHP Newsletter, as a poster presentation, or a clinical/management pearl at an educational meeting.  For the sake of this award a Small or Rural Hospital is defined as any hospital with 100 beds or less, as reported on the hospital’s most recently filed Medicare Cost Report OR any hospital operating outside of the Louisville/Lexington contiguous metropolitan area.

Award qualifications include:

  • A practice of pharmacy within the state of Kentucky
  • The institution has implemented changes within the award cycle with specific consideration to the needs of the Small or Rural Hospital practice environment to make significant progress towards implementing one or more aspects of the ASHP Pharmacy Practice Advancement Initiative (PAI) including but not limited to: optimizing pharmacists’ roles within the health-system, advancing the application of information technology in the medication use process, advancing the use of pharmacy technicians, or successful implementation of new pharmacy practice initiatives.
  • Must demonstrate positive outcomes for patient care, the institution, and the profession of pharmacy
  • The process and implementation must be multidisciplinary and promote organizational development
  • Submitting pharmacist must be a KSHP member.

Individual Awards:

KSHP Practitioner Recognition Program – Fellow of the Kentucky Society of Health-System Pharmacists
Awarding Fellowship in the Kentucky Society of Health-System Pharmacists is one means by which the Society fosters and rewards demonstrated excellence in hospital and health-system pharmacy. Successful candidates for Fellow status will have made a sustained contribution to KSHP and will have demonstrated a high level of excellence in health-system pharmacy.

To be eligible for consideration, an applicant must be a current practitioner member of KSHP and have sustained membership for at least ten years, have a record of outstanding service to the profession through active involvement in KSHP, and at least ten years of professional experience and achievements in hospital and health-system pharmacy.  Current members of the KSHP Board of Directors and members of the Awards and Recognition committee are not eligible for nomination.

Practitioners may self-nominate and complete the application in its entirety. If nominated by another party, the nominee is still responsible for reviewing the application for accuracy prior to submission.  The purpose of this application is to establish an objective basis whereby applicants can be evaluated based on the Fellow criteria. Each application is reviewed by members of the KSHP Awards and Nominations Committee, which recommends to the Board of Directors whether an applicant should be awarded Fellow status.

In addition to the KSHP Fellow Application (available on KSHP web-site), a complete submission will include the following:

  1. Curriculum Vitae
  2. Recommendation Letters - Recommendations from three (3) colleagues (i.e., practitioners, administrators or academicians) who can attest to your achievement of the Fellow criteria.

KSHP Pharmacist of the Year Award
Recognizes an individual pharmacist for his or her leadership, vision, and continuous contribution to the practice of pharmacy.

Award qualifications include:

  • Must be a practicing pharmacist for at least five years in Kentucky (or contiguous metropolitan area)
  • Specific outstanding achievements in the performance of regular duties including development of new systems, techniques, inventions, suggestions for improvement of patient care, and outstanding job accomplishments
  • Sustained significant contributions to pharmacy practice at the practice site that increases or enhances pharmacist’s roles in providing patient care, improves the use of pharmacy systems or promotes innovative practice models or services
  • Participation in community programs which add to or improve welfare and morale
  • Awards and honors received for outstanding job accomplishments or contributions to the community
  • Participation in advisory councils, committees, boards, etc.
  • Documented sustained service to KSHP and other professional organizations at various levels
  • Sustained involvement in precepting, research, publishing and presenting
  • Active member in KSHP

KSHP New Practitioner of the Year Award
Recognizes an innovative new practitioner who has made significant contributions to pharmacy practice in their first 1-5 years as a practitioner (or 1-5 years following a pharmacy residency training program). This award hopes to foster involvement from the beginning of one’s career.

Award qualifications include:

  • Significant contributions to pharmacy practice at the institution or practice site that increases or enhances pharmacist’s roles in providing patient care, improves the use of pharmacy systems, or promotes innovative practice models or services Involvement in community and/or community service
  • Documented service to KSHP and other professional organizations at various levels
  • Involvement in precepting, research, publishing and presenting
  • Self-improvement efforts through enrollment in formal and informal educational programs, and participation in technical and professional societies by presentation of papers, attending symposia, seminars, etc.
  • One letter of recommendation from a member of KSHP
  • Active member in KSHP

Candidates provide their curriculum vitae to the Awards and Nominations Committee upon nomination.

KSHP Resident of the Year Award
Recognizes an individual pharmacy resident for their contribution to the practice of pharmacy through contributions and improvements at their institution/practice site and throughout the state.

Award qualifications include:

  • Graduate of a PGY1 or PGY2 Residency Program in Kentucky within the past year
  • Significant contributions to pharmacy practice at the practice site that increases or enhances pharmacist’s roles in providing patient care, improves the use of pharmacy systems, or promotes innovative practice models or services
  • Involvement in community and/or community service
  • Documented service to KSHP d and other professional organizations at various levels
  • Involvement in precepting, research, publishing and presenting
  • Self-improvement efforts through enrollment in formal and informal educational programs, participation in technical and professional societies by presentation of papers, attending symposia, seminars, etc.
  • Letter of recommendation from a KSHP member

Candidates provide their curriculum vitae to the Awards and Nominations Committee upon nomination.

KSHP Technician of the Year Award
Recognizes outstanding performance by a pharmacy technician currently practicing in a Kentucky Health-Systems Pharmacy practice setting.

Award qualifications include:

  • Active KSHP technician member
  • A Certified Technician in a health-system pharmacy role for at least 3 years
  • Demonstrates work towards advancement of the role of pharmacy technicians
  • Outstanding performance in the workplace including mentoring of fellow technicians and serving as an advocate for patient care and patient safety

Candidates provide a letter summarizing their training and professional experience to the Awards and Nominations Committee upon nomination.

KSHP Pharmacy Mentor of the Year
Recognizes an individual who has positively influenced the professional development of students, residents or new practitioners of KSHP.  The individual is not necessarily a faculty member or preceptor from a college of pharmacy.  Nominees are identified based on responses from student, resident and new practitioner members of KSHP.

Award qualifications include:

  • Demonstrates active involvement in the professional growth and development of students, residents or new practitioners.
  • Demonstrates provision of regular feedback, encouragement, and support, involvement in the development of professional pharmacy practice, and encouragement towards active engagement in professional advocacy organizations
  • Mentor is a facilitator in helping mentees achieve competencies and career objectives.
  • Active member of KSHP

Literature Contribution Award

This award recognizes an individual who has made important contributions to the advancement and expansion of pharmacy and/or pharmacy practice through scientific literature.

Award qualifications include:

  • At least a 10-year record of publishing pharmacy-related literature
  • Magnitude of contribution to pharmacy education, practice and/or future of pharmacy research
  • Originality and innovation of content
  • Scope of publications in terms of topic areas and place of publications
  • Active member of KSHP and has not been a recipient of this award in the past 10 years

Residency Program Director of the Year Award

This award recognizes a residency program director who serves as a role model for residents and exemplifies leadership, creativity, and innovation throughout their program.

Award qualifications include:

  • Current ASHP-accredited pharmacy residency program director who has been in the role for at least three years
  • Demonstrates significant contributions to pharmacy education through teaching, leadership, mentorship, patient care and safety, program development and improvement, research, and resident and preceptor development
  • Demonstrates provision of regular feedback, encouragement, and support, involvement in the development of professional pharmacy practice, and encouragement towards active engagement in professional advocacy organizations
  • Exhibits dedication, innovation, creativity, leadership, teamwork, advocacy, patient care and safety, and role modeling
  • Facilitates in helping mentees achieve competencies and career objectives
  • Optimizes the quality of education in their program
  • Enhances the overall residency experience for learners and preceptors
  • Active member of KSHP and has not been a recipient of this award in the past 5 years
